Right round Xmas I purchased a Roland AX-Synth. At that time every retailer (local and otherwise) was out of stock, but Nova Musik in Wisconsin bent over backwards and got me a unit (in comparison to Sweetwater's candy, they shipped me the AX gig bag, a coffee mug, a 1/2 pound of their custom-roasted coffee, a logo beanie, a logo t-shirt, and upgraded my shipping to 2-day free of charge). Hats off to N*M (or, 'beanie-off'), I'll definitely give them another try in the future. Okay, the AX-Synth is a hoot to play. I did indeed feel supremely foolish strapping it on for the first time in my living room. But the freedom of being able to stroll the house and throw licks from upstairs, in the family room, out in the backyard is really addictive. It's very light on the shoulder - I have a early 80's Les Paul so I'm aware what 'heft' can be like for a GP - but the AX is very comfortable on the shoulder. The 'neck' controls are not bad. The database recognizes 1,746,000 software titles and delivers updates for your software including minor upgrades. With all due respect, Professor Boyd, your argument is not at all compelling. It seems that you are taking the 'thinking outside the box' (TOTB) metaphor much more. The pitch ribbon is generally preset to a whole-step max up, while on some of the guitar patches the 'down' range is larger to approximate a whammy bar. The mod 'bar' is intuitive, although it's hard to sustain an upwardly-bent note (bent with the ribbon) and NOT engage mod. I haven't found a great use for the D-beam function yet. The Port, Hold and Bender buttons on the back of the 'neck' are oddly positioned for me, but I don't see myself using them that much. The 'neck' is generally thicker than I would have preferred. If they had gotten it to the approximate thickness of a guitar neck it would have been more to my preference. ![]() KB action is light, synth-like and.well.just dutiful. Not as luxurious as my Novation Remote SL, but it'll work. It's light and fast, the length of the keys seem just a tad shorter than normal, the throw seem shallow. The qualification reflects the widespread use of English in. But for throwing off the impromptu 64th-note riff, it works great. Playing position needed a lot of getting used to. Had to fiddle with strap position (the AX has four different strap buttons) to get comfortable. Even after that, playing with my RH down by my hip/thigh is different, and playing two-handed is very much 'T-Rex with those little forearms'. Sounds are really nice, far more than I expected. I easily found several synth leads, pads and lead guitar patches to use in my setlist. FX in the factory programs are all quite usable out-of-the-box. Pianos and organs, well, they'll do - nothing to right home about but of course not the meat & potatoes of the intended function. There's a killer harmonica in there. Not feeling any special love for the 'Supernatural' patches - they're not bad, but the subtlety of the portamento articulations is not what I'm using this thing for. First gig - with my Shure PGX wireless, strolled the dance floor with my sax player for the first tune (he's running wireless as well). Dancing with gals, trading 8's and 16's, just had an absolute blast and the audience really dug it. Or it was just my fedora. After the gig, I decided to sand off all the logos and printing and repaint white. It looks a lot cleaner now, although inspired by the Zen Riffer and Redkey's awesome Nord custom job, I may find someone to custom blast this thing soon. Also decided the best way to get the wireless TX unit secure is to take it off the strap and velcro it to the back of the AX. Second gig: Again, me and sax went strolling with the dancers (wedding reception). Audience loves it again. This really adds an element to our show that we're all digging. Battery life is probably just as advertised. Definitely a good move buying rechargeables for this. ![]() Haven't installed the patch editor yet, as I'm focusing more on getting Birdland memorized on this thing that tweaking patches at present. Short version: It was a big swallow for me to get up the gumption to strap on and step out, but I'm really happy with the unit, what it does for our show, and the very real freedom it offers. For all the detractors and critics who will render a charge of 'Blasphemy!' Or 'Foolishness!' Or similar, that's okay. I've seen in the eyes of the audience how they light up to me taking this out to them.
